Backhoe Training

Course Description:

Backhoe Training is a Heavy Equipment training course required by anyone who will be operating a backhoe on the worksite. A driver’s license and 10th grade education is required, and other prerequisites may also include WHMIS training, Ground Disturbance Level Two, and Standard First Aid.

Learning Objectives & Specific Outcomes:
Operators should understand correct backhoe operating procedures, potential workspace hazards (including tipping), and general characteristics of the ground being dug up.

This 4-day Backhoe Training course combines classroom experience with hands-on training. In-class, participants learn relevant provincial and federal backhoe regulations, inspection techniques and general safety tips. In the hands-on portion the instructor demonstrates proper operator procedures, covering topics such as startup and shutdown procedures, steering and positioning, trenching and excavation, and loading and hauling. Trainees must pass a written exam and demonstrate proficiency with the machine in a hands-on practicum to receive their certificate.
