Overhead Crane

Course Overview:

Overhead Crane Training is a Heavy Equipment Entry-Level course required for anyone who will be operating an overhead crane on the worksite. A 10th grade education is required, and other prerequisites may also include WHMIS training and Standard First Aid.

The 1-day Overhead Crane Training Course combines classroom experience with hands-on training. In-class, participants learn relevant Provincial and Federal overhead crane regulations, different types of rigging, dos and don’ts of crane operation, and how to measure loads. In the hands-on portion the instructor demonstrates proper operator procedures, covering topics such as hoisting, rigging, and radio communication. Trainees must pass a written exam and demonstrate proficiency with the machine in a hands-on practicum.

Learning Objectives & Specific Outcomes:

An overhead crane is metal device set high above a worksite that utilizes a hoist-and-pulley system to lift and move materials. Frayed or broken hoisting ropes, overweight loads, or improperly secured loads can lead to loads falling and cause problems ranging from lost merchandise to personal injury. Operators should understand different types of rigging, how to estimate and measure loads and how to spot and avoid potential worksite hazards.
