Sanding Truck

Course Overview:

Sanding Truck Training is a Heavy Equipment Entry-Level course required for anyone who will be operating a sanding truck. A truck driver’s licence and 10th grade education is required, and other prerequisites may also include WHMIS training and Standard First Aid. Snowplow Truck Training may be a useful companion course.

Learning Objectives & Specific Outcomes:

A sanding truck or gritter is a road vehicle equipped with a hydraulic mechanism that spreads grit (rock salt) on roads to provide better grip and melt snow and ice. While sanding trucks are not usually off-road vehicles, they may drive slower than the speed limit and are almost always driven in adverse road conditions, so operators must learn how to navigate poor conditions and operate their vehicles safely.
Topics Include:

The 2-day Sanding Truck Training Course combines classroom experience with hands-on training.

In-class, participants learn relevant provincial and federal sanding truck regulations, inspection techniques, safety tips, defensive driving, and when weather conditions require the deployment of sanding trucks. In the hands-on portion the instructor demonstrates proper operator procedures, covering topics such as navigating poor road conditions, loading sand into the vehicle, deploying the hydraulic mechanism, and more. Trainees must pass a written exam and demonstrate proficiency with the machine in a hands-on practicum to receive their certificate.
