Trencher & Plow

Course Overview:

Trencher and Plow Training is a Heavy Equipment Entry-Level course required for anyone who will be operating a trencher and plow on the worksite. A driver’s licence and 10th grade education is required, and other prerequisites may also include WHMIS training, Ground Disturbance Level Two, and Standard First Aid.

Learning Objectives & Specific Outcomes:

A trencher is a piece of heavy machinery designed to dig trenches, while a plow is a farming implement used to turn the earth to create fertile ground for planting. Combination trencher and plows can be used to dig long trenches to lay wires, pipes, and more. Like all heavy machinery, trencher and plows can be very dangerous if operated unsafely. Operators must learn how to correctly operate their machines, how to approach different types of terrain, and how to spot potential hazards on the job site.

Topics Include:

This 3-day Trencher and Plow Training Course combines classroom experience with hands-on training. In-class, participants learn the fundamentals of trenching, the different types of trenchers and plows, inspection techniques, safety tips, and more. In the hands-on portion the instructor demonstrates proper operator procedures, covering topics such as trenching, plowing, steering, handling difficult terrain, and more. Trainees must pass a written exam and demonstrate proficiency with the machine in a hands-on practicum to receive their certificate.
