Compaction Equipment (Rollers)

Course Overview:

Compaction Equipment (Roller) Training is a Heavy Equipment training course required for anyone who will be operating a roller in a workplace environment, such as on a construction site. A driver’s license and 10th grade education is required, and other prerequisites may also include WHMIS training and Standard First Aid.

Learning Objectives & Specific Outcomes:

A roller is piece of heavy machinery with a heavy cylinder drum on the front to compact soil. Like all heavy machinery, rollers can be very dangerous if operated unsafely – the metal drum can inflict serious injury or death in the event of an accident. Operators should understand correct roller operating procedures and how to spot potential hazards on the job site.

Topics Include:

Compaction Equipment course combines classroom experience with hands-on training. In class, participants learn relevant provincial and federal compaction equipment regulations, the difference between static and vibratory compactors, how to account for different soil types and conditions, worksite and equipment inspection techniques, safety tips, and more. In the hands-on portion, the instructor demonstrates proper operator procedures, covering topics such as startup and shutdown, steering, and how to manage compaction areas. Trainees must pass a written exam and demonstrate proficiency with the machine in a hands-on practicum to receive their certificate.
