Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize Hazardous Materials: Understand and identify hazardous material classifications, such as flammable, corrosive, toxic, and reactive substances.
- Interpret Safety Symbols and Labels: Gain proficiency in reading and understanding HAZMAT labels, symbols, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to determine material risks and handling requirements.
- Assess Potential Risks: Evaluate the potential dangers associated with different hazardous materials and develop an initial action plan to mitigate risks.
- Initiate Emergency Response Protocols: Learn basic response actions in the event of a HAZMAT incident, including safe evacuation, communication, and containment strategies.
- Understand the Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Identify appropriate PPE for different hazardous substances to reduce exposure risks.
Course Content:
This one-day program combines classroom instruction with interactive learning components. Key topics covered include:
- HAZMAT Classifications and Properties: An in-depth exploration of hazardous material categories and the potential health and environmental effects of each.
- Regulatory Standards and Compliance: Overview of regulations and standards that govern the safe handling and response to hazardous materials.
- Hazard Communication (HazCom): Understanding labels, SDS, and other forms of hazard communication to promote safe handling.
- Response Procedures: Initial steps in handling HAZMAT incidents, including containment, reporting, and contacting emergency responders.
- Personal Safety and PPE Selection: Basics of selecting and using PPE for various types of hazardous material exposure.
Evaluation and Certification:
Participants are evaluated through practical assessments and a final review of their understanding of HAZMAT awareness concepts. Successful completion of the course results in a HAZMAT Awareness certification from IRWIN'S Safety, valid for three years.
