Asbestosis is a serious medical condition caused by exposure to asbestos fibers that can lead to permanent lung damage and other chronic lung diseases. In this article, we will explore the symptoms, causes, and risk factors for developing this progressive interstitial lung disease.

Asbestosis Symptoms

What is Asbestosis?

Asbestosis is an incurable lung condition that results from prolonged exposure to asbestos products over a long period of time. The asbestos fibers get lodged in the lung tissue, causing inflammation and scarring that impairs normal lung function and breathing.

People at the highest risk include construction workers, factory employees, and others routinely working with asbestos products like floor tile or insulation. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent lung damage from worsening.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of asbestosis may include:

  • Chest tightness
  • Dry cough that persists
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath with activity
  • Finger clubbing

These symptoms typically don’t appear until 10-20 years after initial exposure. A chest X-ray can detect early lung damage before major symptoms develop.

As the disease worsens, severe shortness of breath can occur and require oxygen therapy. The lung scarring is permanent and can severely impact the quality of life.

Causes & Risk Factors

The cause of asbestosis is repeated prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibers. These tiny fibers lodge in the lungs, resulting in inflammation and buildup of scar tissue.

Risk factors for developing asbestosis include:

  • Prolonged occupational exposure to asbestos products, like insulation or ceiling tiles
  • Intense or repeated exposure, even for short periods
  • Smoking – this multiplies asbestosis risk considerably
  • Genetics – some people are more susceptible

There is also an increased risk of lung cancer and another cancer called mesothelioma with asbestosis.

The CDC's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry provides facts on asbestos exposure risks, including significantly increased risks of lung cancer and mesothelioma with asbestosis.

Diagnosis

If asbestosis symptoms are present, the doctor will take a full medical history, asking about possible asbestos exposure.

Some common diagnostic tests include:

  • Chest X-ray – can detect the onset of lung damage
  • CT scan – provides detailed images of lung tissue
  • Lung function test – measures lung capacity and oxygen intake
  • Tissue sample (biopsy) – examines lung tissue for scarring

These tests can confirm diagnosis and assess the extent of permanent lung damage.
