Course Objective:

Swift Water Rescue (Intro & Awareness) course certifies trainees with a Swiftwater Rescue Awareness Certificate which teaches the basics of swiftwater rescue and equips trainees to assist with shore-based, low-risk rescues.

Learning Objectives & Specific Outcomes:

Swiftwater Rescue Awareness is an Emergency Services Training course. Trainees develop a basic understanding of swiftwater hazards and rescue techniques from the “cold zone” (at least ten feet away from moving water). This course is aimed at those who may be called on to assist rescue operators/technicians or self-rescues.

Topics Include:

This 1-day Swiftwater Rescue Awareness Course is offered in-class. Trainees learn federal and provincial legislation and duties and responsibilities regarding swiftwater rescues. The course then moves onto water dynamics, river hazards and the difference between high-risk and low-risk rescues. Trainees learn about rescue equipment, including basic knots and reaching and throwing techniques. The course also covers human panic mechanisms, medical considerations and drowning risks. Trainees must pass a written exam to receive their certificate.
