Course Overview:
Swift Water Rescue Operations course teaches the students the basics of swift water rescue and equips trainees to perform shore-based rescue.
Swift Water Rescue Operations is an Emergency Services Training course. Trainees develop a basic understanding of swift water hazards and rescue techniques from the “warm zone” (within ten feet of moving water). This course is aimed at those who may be called on to perform shore-based rescue.
The 2- to 3-day Swift Water Rescue Operator Course combines classroom experience with hands-on training. In-class, trainees review federal and provincial legislation and duties and responsibilities regarding swift water rescues, before the course moves onto water dynamics, river hazards and the difference between high-risk and low-risk rescues. Trainees learn about rescue planning, risk assessment and site evaluations before learning about advanced rescue equipment, including anchoring, rigging, and mechanical advantage, rescue boards, and reaching and throwing techniques. The course also covers human panic mechanisms, medical considerations and drowning risks.
In the hands-on portion, participants learn hand signals and river communication and practice shore-based rescue techniques with an assortment of rescue equipment. They also practice shallow-water crossings, self-rescues, defensive swimming, and more. Trainees must pass a written exam and showcase their competence in hands-on practicum to receive their certificate.
